Shopify volume discounts and quantity breaks without Shopify Plus

"Buy 3, save 10%" is the most effective discount in retail because it raises the order value instead of giving money away on orders you would have received anyway. On Shopify it is also the one merchants struggle with: the native discount editor cannot do real quantity tiers, and the quantity rules in the admin are a B2B feature that needs Shopify Plus.

What Shopify can do natively

  • Amount off products or order, with a minimum quantity or minimum purchase. One tier only: you cannot say 10% at 3 and 20% at 6 in the same discount.
  • Buy X get Y: works for free items, not for tiered percentages.
  • Quantity rules and volume pricing on the product page: B2B only, Shopify Plus only.

Stacking several automatic discounts does not solve it either: Shopify applies the discount combination rules, and customers cannot see the tiers on the product page.

What an app adds

Since Shopify Functions replaced the old Script Editor, any app can register a discount function that runs inside checkout on every plan. That is how tiered volume discounts work today: the app stores your tiers, the function applies the right percentage at checkout, and most apps add a theme block that shows the tiers on the product page so shoppers know that one more unit unlocks the next price.

Protect the margin

The classic volume-discount mistake is a 20% tier on a product with a 25% margin, combined with a welcome code. Floorline, our Shopify app, exists for this: it reads the cost per item you keep in Shopify, computes a floor price from the minimum margin you set, and never lets a tier or bundle sell under it. You set the tiers once; the floor does the policing.

Setting it up

  1. Decide the tiers from your actual order data: look at the quantity people already buy and put the first tier one unit above it.
  2. Set a floor price per product or collection. If you do not know your landed cost, use the supplier price plus 15%.
  3. Show the tiers on the product page (most apps ship a theme block for it) so the discount is visible before checkout.
  4. Run it for two weeks and compare average order value, not revenue: that is the number volume pricing moves.
